This chat covers your work’s unique hook, branding, packaging your material (graphics, video), how to find new work, create an act that is sellable and has a shelf life,  reinvent an act that is not longer feeding you and most importantly, how to stay emotionally healthy in a field that can be so negative.

In “Crotch-to-Air Chair Tricks,” you’ll fall head-over-heels in love with chair tricks — literally. From backwards shoulder rolls to gravity-defying inversions, Will X. Uly will introduce you to chair acrobatics that will leave your audiences begging for more. Come prepared to move: we’ll start with an energizing warmup and then dive headfirst into safe ways to enter, hold, and exit inversions. This is a true intermediate class: Students should be able to safely lift themselves into a headstand against a wall, but are not required to have mastery of hand or arm balances.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

In “Crotch-to-Air Chair Tricks” students will learn safe entries, holds, and exits for shoulder balances and rolls onto and off of a chair.

COURSE METHODOLOGY:

We will spend 15 minutes doing an active warmup, including core-targeting exercises that will both prepare students’ bodies for this physical class and help students identify the muscles that they will need to safely execute chair acrobatics.

The class will then pair off, so that students can spot one another. The remainder of the class will alternate between demonstration of different chair acrobatics moves and transitions, demonstration of safe spotting, entrances, and exits, and then time to practice each movement. We will learn up to five movements: two different entrances into a shoulder balance on the chair, a modified “headstand” on the legs of a chair, and two exits to the floor: a fake split and a backwards shoulder roll off of the chair.

We will spend 5-7 minutes at the end of class cooling down and stretching.

WHAT TO BRING:

If you have a folding chair of your own, it is recommended to bring it.  There will be banquet chairs available but they're just not the same.

You will be asked to sign an injury waiver before taking this class.

Sit with April March, The First Lady of Burlesque, as she reads from her book, Reflections of My Life.

"Married as often as Elizabeth Taylor, April March is a romantic.  She had her suitors, including the King of Saudi Arabia, eating from the tips of her satin gloves.  Her story is incredible.  She maintained her travails and triumphs with a wink in her eye and kindness in her heart.  She is a mother, friend and teacher to many of the young women following in her footsteps today.  She will always be a burlesque legend."

April has been a headline act in burlesque since 1952.  During her more than thirty-year career, she gained popularity throughout the United StatesCanadaMexico and Europe for her classy and sophisticated striptease.  April  was one of the innovators of the elegant strip tease.
